a web-browser app that compensates for hand tremors using the accelerometer of the device

project year:2022
Product InnovationApp Development

The Background

More than 10 million people worldwide suffer from Parkinson's disease. The most common symptom is a tremor, usually on one side. This uncontrollable tremor makes even the simplest hand movements an extreme challenge.

Among other things, the tremor gives Parkinson's patients a hard time operating smart devices, or even just reading on them. We want to change that.

The Idea

We developed an app that compensates for tremors using the accelerometer of the device. The app itself opens a browser window that is slightly smaller than the screen all around. We use this buffer zone to always move the browser window in the opposite direction of the shaking in real time. This way, the device shakes, but the browser window stays in the same place for the viewer. The usability of the app menu has also been specially adapted to the needs of Parkinson's patients. The app and all of its features were developed in close collaboration with Parkinson's patients.

My Role

I was brought on as the sole Unity developer in the final project phase to ensure a successful and timely app deployment. Taking ownership of the remaining development tasks, I focused on optimizing performance, resolving technical issues, and implementing final adjustments to meet quality and functionality standards. My role included preparing the app for deployment, coordinating with QA and design teams to finalize features, managing the build process to ensure a smooth release, and a successful release on the App Store.
